Following (1998)

Nick - Feels like a noir college film and plays as a smart mystery. If this were my first Christopher Nolan experience I would be looking forward to each and every film he produced. Currently envious of those who actually got to follow him from the beginning and watch him grow into what he is today (excluding The Dar Knight Rises). This movie reminded me what a genius Christopher is and how excited I am for Dunkirk. 7.5/10

Tristan - Christopher Nolan's debut film. A one hour and ten minute crime mystery shot in black and white on about a $5,000 budget. I really enjoyed it. Intention or not he foreshadowing to things to come from Nolan was fun to pick out while watching this.

Ally - I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It was a little bit of a build up but by the time you realize what's going on, you're sucked in trying to piece together the puzzle. I thought it was smartly written and an interesting story. I don't know much about directing "styles" so I can't really comment on how this compares to or foreshadows the rest of Nolan's career, but I can say that I thought it was a fantastic achievement on such a small budget and for a film debut I'm sure it showed a lot of promise at the time for his career. I don't know…it was good.

My favorite genres are probably sci-fi and fantasy, but my general interests vary from period pieces to musicals, to almost anything from Pixar. I'll read a review before I watch the movie, but I'll try not to let it sway my opinion as I'm watching it, but try to see it from their perspective. What I look at most is overall concept and dialogue mainly, and the delivery of a line that'll make or break a scene depending on the mood they're trying to establish. Guilty pleasure? Kids and family movies. Straight to dvd!

I wouldn't consider myself a big film-person. But there are films that I absolutely love that make me want to look into films and story telling more now. Trying to come up with my own stories recently has gotten me to start paying more attention to story telling in films, and what is good and what is bad. As a painter, I have a high appreciation for beautiful visuals. I also love musical scores, likeable characters, and emotion and feeling in films. I'm also pretty picky, but (hopefully) not snobby. Because like I said, I don't know everything. It's just my taste and personal preference.

and I don't love movies. I mean, I like them, but I have a 2 year old daughter, so everything I watch is either around her, or watched after she goes to bed. Even then I find myself watching movies that I would want to show her. So I end up not watching a lot of "important" movies. So I guess that means I don't love movies. But guys, you know what's better then seeing all the good, important movies?? Being able to control....hm..that's a creepy word to use. Let's say being able to "guide" a child's life so that she watches the original planet of the apes spoiler free. She's going to be like "ok boring space exploration, whatever. Crash on an alien planet, whatever. GORILLAS ON HORSEBACK!?!?"
