The Iron Giant (1999)

Nick - "The soul never dies." Although I disagree with this statement it doesn't change the fact that this movie is great. It feels ahead of it's time and I think the credit goes to the director Brad Bird. He created an iron giant that we care about and dialogue so natural you almost forget you're not watching a live action movie.  8.5/10

Ally - Usually, when I watch a "childhood" film for the first time in adulthood, it doesn't click with me and I find it very meh. This one was different! It was surprisingly mature for a story about a boy befriending a giant robot from space and there were plenty of references and jokes that everyone could appreciate. The characters were all interesting and it held my attention from beginning to end. I wish I'd watched this when I was young but I was too busy watching Disney movies. Also, the ending was really satisfying.

8/10

Levi - The Iron Giant, less about the relationship between a boy and his robot, and more about how a youth struggles to adapt to life without a father figure. When Hogarths mother struggles to spit out the words, "I'm not in the mood", it reminded her of why her husband left. Now she doesn't sleep in the same room without thinking of him, and puts it up for rent. Hogarth is now impatient, quick to anger, and selfish, hiding away a giant robot he knows nothing about, but I'm guessing he was banished from his home planet for being a cannibal, clonked his head when he crashed on earth, forgot pretty much everything about himself except for this insatiable lust to eat metal things. Iron Giant is always a good time. 7/10
